GK fridge magnet

from gerald keaney and the gerald keaneys

Features ontological slogan and fan picture of keyboardist from New Order.Greyscale only.

The GK fridge magnet suggests an ontology wherein relations are not secondary to things. This might seem counter-intuitive on the basis that you need things for relations, suggesting things are primary after all. So, for instance, before you have a love relationship, you need two separate people.

It is true you do seem to need things to 'bear' relations, and so as a condition for the existence of relations. But this does not mean the thing is primary and that relations are secondary. A single thing will always have an identity relation to itself. Even if we imagine it is all that exists, we still then imagine a relation.

As concerns empirical evidence for the view that relations are not secondary, as we ramp up the giga-electron volts and go deeper/smaller into matter using particle colliders, we don't simply find a single fundamental particle as a basic thing. Instead certain elementary bosons (e.g. gluons) act as force carriers giving rise to forces between other thing-particles. It seems the explanations of sub-atomic particle physics have come to refer to relations as much as to things.
